Is moonstone good for engagement rings?

Yes, in fact, it is! Moonstone is a great option for anyone who is looking for something more unique in comparison to the classic diamond. Moonstone has a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale. So it is a softer stone and does require a little more care, compared to a diamond with a hardness of 10 or sapphire with a 9, but it is still a good choice with a very alluring price.

It can be made as a cabochon or faceted like a diamond (see the example to the right). If you are looking to create a custom moonstone engagement ring or piece of jewelry, you can always send us an email at info@fineandflux.com. It takes 5 seconds and is commitment free!

How to clean and take care of your moonstone ring and jewelry

As mentioned above, moonstone is a slightly softer stone. Therefore, you do want to remove your ring while gardening or anything that could cause strenuous contact against the gemstone.

To clean your moonstone jewelry, you can simply take a toothbrush in look warm water, a little bit of soap, and gently brush away any accumulated dirt or lotion.

Identifying different types of Moonstone.

There are different types of moonstone and even different colors. In the Moonstone family, you will find:

The colorless moonstone: It is exactly as the name describes, fully transparent with a slight blue sheen to it.

Rainbow Moonstone: rainbow moonstone is a crossbreed between moonstone and labradorite and is the highest quality of moonstone available.

True white: This is a moonstone with a milky-white color. It is more opaque than the colorless moonstone. It is the inclusions in the stone that creates the milky white look. These inclusions make it of a lesser quality than the translucent moonstones.

Then you will find the more honey-colored moonstone, brownish-honey, peach-colored and peppered moonstones. These are not seen as often in the common market because the market place favors the colorless and rainbow moonstone.

How to tell if your moonstone is real?

There are 3 types of moonstone: transparent, translucent, and opaque. The most bought type is translucent. People favor it for its nice sheen it also has less inclusion, therefore less milkiness. But where there is demand there will always be synthetic copy-cats. So how do you know if your gemstone is real?

Check for inclusion. All-natural gemstones will have at least some minor inclusions. It could be faint milkiness, small cracks, or even what looks like "peppered specks". These are all common occurrences in precious and semi-precious gemstones.

If there are no signs of these traits, the price is too good to be true. If the rainbow/blue flair is too strong then it probably is too good to be true!
